SECONDARY EDUCATION(ELIMU SEKONDARI)
Arusha District Council has a total number of 48 secondary schools of which government schools are 24 and 24. Private schools with a total of 322 classrooms (Government schools). The ratio of pupils per classroom is 1: 69 compared to the ratio 1:40 nationally. Therefore there is a shortage of 226 classrooms in the District. There are 15,899 desks which make a ratio of one desk to pupils to be 1:4 instead of 1:1 nationally. The student pit latrine ratio is 1:30 for boys and 1:29 for girls, compared to national requirement of 1:25 and 1:20 .respectively.
There are 22,275 students, enrolment rate of 68% students of whom 11,294 are boys and 10,981 are girls. Secondary student’s enrolments have increased from 20,746. in year 2011 to 22,275 in year 2012, at the same time those qualifying to join Higher education increased from 192. in the year 2011 to 200 in the year 2012. However the percentage of students qualifying to join higher education decreased from 26% in 2011 to 30% .in the year 2012 due to poor performance in the 2011 form four examinations. There are 662 teachers, 0 with certificate, 445 with diploma, and 217 with degree. The ratio for one teacher to pupils currently is 34. The ratio for one book to pupils is 1: 4 School dropout is still a problem, the major reasons are, early pregnancies economic hardships and low attitude towards education.
